What Is Your Breaking Point?
What Is Your Breaking Point? The Pain That Forces Us to Change
Mindset, Functional Athlete, PhenixFitt, Longevity
Before I was diagnosed with Lyme disease, I was a machine. I could jump up and knock out 40 pull-ups without thinking twice. I felt bulletproof. I thought the strength I had built was permanent.
Then the disease hit.
It didn't just slow me down; it dismantled me. I remember the exact moment I realized how bad it was. I was inside my studio, building a rocket mass heater — experimenting with an alternate form of heat, the way I always like to do. I reached down with my left hand to pick up a standard brick. I picked it up once. Twice. By the sixth time, my hand simply stopped working. I could not grip the brick. My left side was completely compromised.
I went from 40 pull-ups to not being able to do a single one. The moment I attempted a pull-up, my entire left side cramped up completely — not just weakness, but a full, total seizing of every muscle on my left side the instant I tried to move. My body was shutting itself down. I went from feeling invincible to feeling fragile, broken, and entirely out of control of my own body.
That was my breaking point.
That was the moment I realized how incredibly fragile the human body can be, and how quickly you can lose everything you have built if you take it for granted. That experience is the fire that drives my commitment to mobility, functional fitness, and the entire PhenixFitt philosophy today. I refuse to ever feel that helpless again.
We Are Driven by Pain and Pleasure
Human beings are simple creatures at our core. We are driven by two primary forces: the desire to gain pleasure, and the desperate need to avoid pain.
But here is the hard truth about most of us, especially as we get older: pleasure is rarely enough to make us change. The promise of "feeling better" or "having more energy" sounds nice, but it rarely gets a person out of bed at 5:30 AM to workout.
Pain, on the other hand? Pain is a master motivator.
Most people will coast through their 30s and 40s, ignoring the warning signs, until the pain of inaction becomes absolutely unbearable. We wait until the universe forces our hand. We wait for a crisis.
The Wake-Up Calls
I talk to people every single week who have finally decided to take their health seriously. And almost every single time, their decision was triggered by a breaking point. A moment of undeniable pain.
What does that wake-up call look like?
It’s sitting in the doctor’s office and hearing that your blood pressure, cholesterol, or A1C numbers are in the danger zone.
It’s playing in the yard with your kids and having to stop after five minutes because your chest is heaving and your knees are screaming.
It’s walking up a single flight of stairs and realizing you are completely winded.
It’s getting down on the floor to fix something under the sink, and realizing you have to strategically plan how to get back up.
It’s watching a friend your exact age suffer a massive heart attack or a stroke out of nowhere.
These are the moments when the illusion of invincibility shatters. These are the moments when the pain of staying the same finally outweighs the pain of doing the work.
Why Do We Wait?
The deeper question is: why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we wait for the heart attack, the diagnosis, or the sheer embarrassment of physical failure before we take action?
We wait because we are masters of rationalization. We tell ourselves we are "just getting older." We blame our jobs, our stress, and our schedules. We convince ourselves that the slow, creeping decline of our physical capability is just a normal part of life.
It is not normal. It is a choice.
Every day you choose not to train, not to move, and not to fuel your body properly, you are choosing weakness. You are choosing to be a liability to your family rather than their protector.
Pick Your Pain
You cannot escape pain in this life. But you do get to choose which pain you endure.
You can choose the pain of daily discipline. The pain of waking up early. The pain of pushing through a heavy workout. The pain of saying no to the garbage food that is slowing you down.
Or, you can wait. You can wait for the big pain to choose for you. The pain of disease. The pain of losing your independence. The pain of looking in the mirror and not recognizing the person staring back at you.
Your Transformation Starts Today
Here is the bottom line. You have one body. One life. And every single day you spend waiting, rationalizing, and telling yourself you will start tomorrow, that body is getting weaker, stiffer, and less capable of doing the things that matter most to you.
I know what it feels like to lose it all. I know what it feels like to reach for a brick and have your hand betray you. I know what it feels like to attempt something your body used to do effortlessly and feel it seize up and shut down. That experience broke something in me — and then it rebuilt me into something far stronger, far more committed, and far more grateful for every rep, every step, and every breath.
You do not have to wait for that moment. You do not have to wait for the diagnosis, the bad numbers, the health scare, or the humiliating realization that you can no longer keep up with your own kids. You do not have to let life force your hand.
You can choose right now.
Not tomorrow. Not Monday. Not after the holidays or when things slow down at work. Right now. Today is the day you stop drifting and start building. Today is the day you stop choosing comfort over capability. Today is the day you decide that you are going to show up — for yourself, for your family, and for every future version of you that is counting on the decision you make in this moment.
At PhenixFitt, we are not here to give you a quick fix or a 30-day challenge. We are here to build Functional Athletes — people who are durable, resilient, and ready for whatever life throws at them. We train for life. We train for longevity. We train so that when the hard moments come — and they will come — we are ready to meet them head-on.
Your breaking point does not have to be a crisis. Let this be it. Let this be the moment you read something that made you put down your phone and decide that enough is enough.
